2026 PANELISTS

If you care about someone on the autism spectrum, listen to someone on the autism spectrum. Then listen to another autistic. And another. Hear them out. Respect their perspective. Open your eyes and truly listen with your heart. We will be doing just that during this year’s “Through Our Eyes” on January 31, 2026. Thanks to those that support our mission, the event is free of charge. For details and to register, visit THIS webpage. Enjoy learning about this year’s panelists!

My name is WHIT DOWNING and I’m a mental health and disability advocate! I am diagnosed with autism, PTSD, and ADHD. I work full time for the Kansas Council on Developmental Disabilities; this is my first ever full-time job, the longest I’ve lasted at any job, and is my absolute dream job! I am passionate about mental wellbeing, advocacy, and creating spaces where people feel seen, supported, and empowered. I bring a growth mindset into my work and my life, believing that progress doesn’t have to be perfect to be meaningful. I care a lot about helping others recognize their strengths and reminding people that having a disability or mental health diagnosis does not limit the ability to live a full, purpose-filled life. When I’m not advocating or learning something new, you’ll likely find me solving Rubik’s Cubes, playing games, writing, or spending time with my cat, Rosalee!

GARRETT HENRY is a student at KU (Rock Chalk!). He participates in the Transition to Postsecondary Education (TPE) program, a two-year certificate program for students with intellectual disabilities. Afterwards, he plans to continue working towards his bachelors degree in mathematics with an emphasis on statistics. Garrett successfully completed his associate’s degree in liberal arts at JCCC in the spring of 2025. He started working at Hy-Vee as a Courtesy Clerk through a summer program with Missouri Voc Rehab and continues to work part-time while attending school. In the spring semester, he will be working at KU as a student grader for the Mathematics Department, supporting introductory and elementary statistics courses. Garrett enjoys playing video games, watching sports, and participating in Special Olympics track and field and softball teams. He plans to play other Special Olympic sports in the future. Garrett is the youngest of four brothers, has two nieces and two nephews, who affectionately call him “Uncle G.”
