BEHAVIOR SPECIALIST ASSISTANT

This is a part time seasonal position, reporting to the Program Coordinator and working under the direct leadership of the Lead Behavior Specialist. The majority of the hours will occur during June and July. There will also be two day and/or overnight camp sessions-one in the spring and one in the fall.

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE:

Planning, Implementing, and Supporting:

  • Assisting with supporting the emotional, social, and behavioral needs of our campers with autism spectrum disorder (ASD)
  • Supporting the campers during both (2) of our four-day summer camp programs and one to two day and/or overnight weekend camps, while focusing on the mission of Camp Encourage.
  • Working collaboratively with the Program Coordinator and the Lead Behavior Specialist
  • Setting each camper up for success by focusing on his or her strengths; following tried and true strategies suggested by each individual’s therapists, educators, and parents; communicating such information with the volunteers that will support that camper, and developing supports needed for camper success
  • Thinking proactively prior to camp (ensuring that all “what ifs” are considered, that all materials are gathered and prepared in advance to decrease wait time, that priming strategies are used to best prepare each camper for activities and for the overall experience, etc.)
  • Considering the function of each behavior; understanding and implementing all that encompasses
  • Developing and maintaining supportive professional relationships with the children, the families, and all volunteers
  • Communicating with parents and service providers prior to and during the camp sessions as needed
  • Utilizing positive behavior supports to encourage positive behavior and emotional well being in the campers
  • Actively being involved with and supervising children during the camp sessions; including residing overnight
  • Collaborating with Lead Behavior Specialist prior to each camp session on campers likely needing additional support

Volunteer Support: 

  • Training, supporting, and supervising volunteers serving at each camp session-specifically in the area of behavior

Miscellaneous: 

  • Understanding and following all policies related to camp programming
  • Maintaining confidentiality regarding children, families, and volunteers
  • Communicating important program issues and information to the Program Coordinator
  • Responding to Board and committee requests with input from the Executive Director
  • Completing other duties not outlined which arise and are important to fulfilling Camp Encourage’s mission

Position requires some nights and weekends thus employee needs to be prepared for and enthusiastic about a non-traditional work schedule.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor’s Degree in related field
  • Ability to pass criminal / registry background screening
  • Strong communication skills
  • Strong organizational skills
  • Self-motivated, able to self-initiate and work independently
  • Ability to work with a multi-disciplinary team
  • Physical ability to get to remote locations on camp property quickly 
  • Strong computer skills in a Windows or Mac environment (preferably familiarity with Google Suite)

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Master Degree in related field
  • Prior experience with Camp Encourage
  • Experience developing positive supports for and directly serving youth with challenging behaviors
  • Current Certification in: Nonviolent Crises Intervention (CPI), The Mandt System, or similar certification
  • Previous experience at specialty camp 
  • Energetic, positive, and inspiring
